Walt Cassidy photographed by Leandro Justen.

In the art of Walt Cassidy, jewelry, sculpture, drawing and photography collide. Process feeds process; he works it through, works it out even – in what constitutes an art of translation. Biography is fractured into distilled moments of metaphor and motif. Viewing his art is like sneaking a peep of a diary, but that diary is coded and enigmatic: sensory – not legible.”

Alice Butler for König, Berlin.

Waltpaper (Walt Cassidy) is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and curator based in Brooklyn, New York. As a subcultural diarist, his explorative and allegorical work is rooted in first hand experiences of identity, gender, sexuality, creative independence and self exploration. Considered one of the foremost voices on New York City’s vibrant art, street and nightlife culture, he has published the books New York Club Kids (Damiani, 2019), The Club Kids (Hotglue, 2024), and Morning Whispers (Hotglue, 2024); and has contributed writing for New York, Interview, Candy, and Impulse magazines, as well as, the books Club Kids from Speakeasies to Boombox and Beyond (Blackdog, 2008) and On The Dancefloor Spinning Out On Screen (A24, 2022).

In 1991, as a teenager, Waltpaper became a central figure within the Club Kids, an artistic and fashion conscious youth movement that emerged from New York City’s thriving nightlife industry. The Club Kids were popularized though their appearances on daytime talk shows, fashion editorials and music videos—making lasting impressions on art, fashion and street culture. During this time he founded the musical group BOOB and the artist collective BLUEPRINT; established an exhibition space, The Little Paper Gallery, within the nightclub Limelight; and contributed writing and editorials for Project X magazine.

Stepping away from nightlife in 1996, he became the Exhibitions Director for 303 Gallery before moving to London in 2002, where he curated the exhibitions: Robert Mapplethorpe Sculptures and Hand Painted Photographs at Aspery Jacques Gallery and Kenneth Anger Invocation of My Demon Brother at Stuart Shave Modern Art, while also serving as Director of Delfina, the UK’s largest artist residency. Returning to New York in 2005, he debuted new photography works at MASS MOCA’s exhibition, The Believers, and began exhibiting with the gallery Invisible Exports. In 2014, he turned towards jewelry design, painted murals, printed matter and writing—which led to the creation of his first book, New York Club Kids.

Waltpaper has appeared in various documentaries and podcasts; been profiled by Vogue, Architectural Digest, Artforum, I-D, Dazed, Another Man, Document, Them, New York Post, Daily Mail and La Repubblica; featured in fashion campaigns for Levis and Esprit; and staged pop-up readings at Village Works, Bureau of General Service—Queer Division and Citiot.

His artworks have been exhibited at Mass MOCA, Vox Populi, Invisible Exports, 303 Gallery, New Discretions, Natalie Kates Projects, Deitch Projects, Paul Kasmin Gallery, Torrence Museum of Art and Watermill Center. He has collaborated with Opening Ceremony, Derek Lam, The Standard Hollywood, Selena Hotel, Long Life China Company, Galeria Melissa and Limited Edition Miami.

He is currently at work on a new book to be released in Japan, Spring 2026.
